From World champions to group stage humiliation! Germany becomes the latest victims of the curse of the World Cup winners.
Four out of the last five FIFA World Cup has been won by European teams and coincidentally all four teams suffer group stage exit humiliation on their quest to retain the world cup.
Out of the last five World Cup only 2002 World Cup won by a non-European team, a Ronaldo-inspired Brazil tasted its fifth World Cup glory.
Germany started their title defense in worst possible manner, suffering a 1-0 shock defeat to Mexico. The margin could have been more if Mexico were more clinical in front of goal.
They were flirted with disaster against Sweden, going down 1-0 in early first half, but second half equalizer from Marco Reus and late winner from Toni Kross saved the day & also World Cup campaign for Germany.
Germany had the simple path to progress from group stage. Win the last game against South Korea and you are through. But they failed miserably against a determined South Korean defense. In desperation Germany went on to all-out attack and South Korea took advantage of it, scored twice in quick succession in the dying moment and Germany becomes the latest victims of curse of the champions.
It all started in 2002, when 1998 World champion France suffer early exit from group stage. France humiliated by 1-0 shock defeat against Senegal and never recovered from that defeat. Brazil ultimately won the 2002 World Cup hosted in Japan/South Korea.
In 2010, Italy failed to win a single game in group featuring Slovakia, Paraguay and New Zealand, just four years after their famous World Cup triumph in Germany. Two back to back 1-1 draw against Paraguay & New Zealand and a 3-2 defeat against Slovakia confirmed Italy’s group stage exit from 2010 World Cup. At the end Spain won their first Ever World Cup in 2010.
But France and Italy’s failure is nothing compared to Spain’s 2014 World Cup disaster. Spain were not only 2010 World Champion but 2008 & 2012 winners too. They were coming in World Cup 2014 for title defense on the back of winning 3 major tournament s in a row- two EURO & a World Cup.
However a catastrophic 5-1 thrashing against Netherlands followed by 2-0 humiliation against Chile ended Spain’s World Cup campaign prematurely.
Germany eventually triumphed in Brazil, beating Lionel Messi’s Argentina, but now packing their bags after early group exit.
With Germany’s failure in title defense, Brazil remains the last team to successfully defend their title in 1962 after winning it in 1958.
